To make full use of the advantage of its neighboring to Hong Kong and Macao, and popularity among and closeness to Southeast Asia, Hainan Normal University has expanded extensively its international cooperation and exchange, broadened the academic communication and enjoyed growing international reputation. So far, the University has built up academic communication and talent cultivation and exchange cooperation with more than 100 universities, colleges, and higher education institutions from 58 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and North and South America.

        Hainan Normal University expends great efforts in promoting its communication and cooperation in talent cultivation with other institutions. So far it has developed "English Plus Major" international talent cultivation projects with Bournemouth and Poole College, Bournemouth University, and University of Surrey in UK. Meanwhile the University has built exchange student projects and talent cultivation cooperation projects with 6 Japanese, 4 British, 2 Australian, 3 Singaporean, and 2 Taiwanese higher education institutions. In recent years exchange students and teaching and administrative staffs of the University sent to these overseas institutions totaled more than 300 and 200 respectively.

        In 2009, the Southeast Asian Teachers' Training Base for Promotion of Chinese was founded in the University with the approval of Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters). The University brings into full play the advantage of “One Base, Three Institutions” (the first batch Educational Base for Chinese Language approved by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, the first batch designated university for foreign students enrollment by the Ministry of Education, and the designated university by the National Chinese Language Office to offer training courses for international and volunteer teachers teaching Chinese as a foreign language), promotes actively the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language, and conducts a series of training and overseas posting for Chinese language teachers and volunteers. Since the first batch of international students in 1988, the University has so far enrolled overseas students from 58 countries, with graduates totaling over 1,800 .
