On April 1st and 2nd, the 2023 Annual Conference of the Chinese Society of Historical Materials of Literature and the first Symposium of Regional Literary Documents were held in Haikou, Hainan province. This conference was hosted by the Chinese Society of Historical Materials of Literature and Hainan Normal University (HNNU). More than 100 renowned scholars, teachers, and students from research institutions, universities, and colleges including the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Henan University, Southwest Minzu University, and Lingnan University of Hong Kong attended the conference online and offline.

Xu Mei, Secretary of the Party Committee of HNNU, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. She said that the School of Literature of HNNU, since its establishment, has made tremendous efforts to sort out and protect ancient literature in Hainan Province, making outstanding contributions to the research of regional literary documents. This national academic event would give a strong boost to the emphasis and promotion of the basic role of historical materials of literature in Hainan, and provide stronger cultural support for the construction of free trade ports.

Liu Yuejin, President of the Chinese Society of Historical Materials of Literature, Guan Aihe and Xu Xiping, Vice Presidents of the Society, and others delivered speeches.

Two keynote reports for academic exchange were arranged at the conference, and each was divided into three subjects -- ancient literature, modern literature, and national literature -- which were held in three sub-venues. Academic exchanges were conducted in the sub-venue of ancient literature around three perspectives, namely literary research, literature research, and research of three Sus, reflecting the characteristics of interdisciplinary interaction. In the sub-venue of modern literature, the study of writers' works, and regions was focused, and the features of regional interactive research from the perspectives of both texts and historical materials were presented. Different levels of exploration such as regional exchange, historical research, and case analysis, were carried out in the seminar on national literature. National literature was spread to the outside of the region and was developed from the early Tang Dynasty to modern times, which fully reflected its exchanges and integration. The attending experts and scholars jointly explored new perspectives and proposed new research methods and ideas for the study of Chinese historical materials of literature.

Professor Wang Xuezhen from the School of Literature presided over the closing ceremony. Professor Xu Xiping said in his closing speech that this event has provided a favorable platform for promoting the development of the discipline of Chinese historical materials of literature and strengthening the connections between universities and scholars. The discipline of Chinese historical materials of literature will yield more fruitful results and better serve the historical process of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
