Historic First Gold! A Gift for the University’s Anniversary—Our University Wins Gold Medal at the 2024 China International College Students’ Innovation Competition

The on-site national finals of the 2024 China International College Students’ Innovation Competition were held from October 12th-15th at the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In this year's competition, six of our university's projects made it to the national finals, achieving a historic best result of one gold medal and five bronze medals. Among them, the project "Optical Grating for Ocean Measurement—A Rapid Response Ocean Temperature and Depth Sensor Based on Fiber Bragg Grating" won the gold medal in the Higher Education Main Contest Undergraduate Innovation Group (Project Leader: Zhao Xinyu, an undergraduate student in the 2022 cohort of the School of Physics and Electronic Engineering, specializing in Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering. This achievement marks our university's first-ever national gold medal in this competition, serving as a tribute to the university's 75th anniversary celebration!


Since the competition's launch, our university has been proactive in organizing and mobilizing participation, receiving over 1,200 project entries and involving more than 10,000 students and teachers, setting a new record for both the number of participants and submissions. Simultaneously, our university meticulously organized internal competitions, and prepared extensively for the provincial and national stages. We held multiple promotional sessions, project training camps, and specialized coaching meetings to provide comprehensive support and services to the teams. Through close cooperation, the projects were repeatedly refined and rehearsed. During the national competition's on-site presentation, our university's participants performed with confidence and poise, fully showcasing the youthful energy and talent of Hainan Normal University students.


It is reported that this year’s competition was co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and related ministries, along with the Shanghai Municipal Government. Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the People’s Government of Minhang District co-organized the event, which featured multiple Contests: the Higher Education Main Contest, the "Red Dream Journey of Youths" Contest, the Vocational Education Contest, the Industrial Challenge Contest, and the Budding Contest. The competition saw 5.14 million projects and 20.836 million participants from 5,406 schools across 153 countries and regions register to compete. After five months of intense selection, 1,410 projects advanced to the on-site national finals.


The outstanding results achieved in this competition are the fruits of the hard work of both the students as well as their instructors, and they reflect the university's and faculties' strong emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship and talent cultivation. Looking ahead, the university will take this competition as an opportunity to summarize its experiences, continuing the fostering and incubating key projects, and rely on various academic competitions to build platforms for teachers and students to exchange and learn. This will inspire greater enthusiasm for innovation and entrepreneurship, fully supporting the improvement of the talent cultivation quality.
